How this word counter works

Every statistic on this page is computed by a small piece of JavaScript running inside your browser tab. When you type or paste, the tool re-counts instantly: words are runs of letters or digits (apostrophes and hyphens keep contractions like don't and compounds like well-known together as one word), characters are counted in Unicode code points both with and without spaces, and sentences are split on end punctuation and line breaks. Because there is no server round-trip, the counts update on every keystroke even for very long documents.

The counting rules are deliberately spelled out — different tools disagree on edge cases, and knowing the rule is the only way to trust the number. If another counter shows a slightly different total for the same text, the difference almost always comes down to how it treats hyphens, apostrophes, numbers or emoji.

What each statistic means

  • Words — tokens of letters/digits; emoji and stray punctuation are not words.
  • Characters — every character including spaces and punctuation, in Unicode code points (one emoji = 1 here).
  • Characters (no spaces) — the same count with all whitespace removed; some assignment and ad-platform limits use this variant.
  • Sentences (approx.) — split on “. ! ? …” plus line breaks. Abbreviations such as e.g. can add a sentence, so this is labeled approximate.
  • Paragraphs — non-empty lines; hitting Enter starts a new paragraph.
  • Reading time — word count ÷ 238 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading rate found in Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis.
  • Speaking time — word count ÷ ~150 words per minute, a widely used pace for presentations and voice-over scripts.
  • Average word length — total letters across all words divided by the word count.

A worked example

Take the text “Practice makes perfect. Practice every day!” The tool reports 6 words (practice, makes, perfect, practice, every, day), 43 characters including spaces, 2 sentences and 1 paragraph. In the keyword panel, practice appears twice — 2 of 6 words, or 33.3% — while common stopwords would have been filtered out had any been present. Reading time rounds to about 2 seconds: tiny texts produce tiny estimates, which is exactly what you want when you scale up to a 1,500-word article (roughly 6–7 minutes of reading at 238 wpm).

The limits panel compares your character count against current commonly documented platform limits: X (Twitter) posts at 280 characters, Instagram captions at 2,200, LinkedIn posts at 3,000, a single SMS segment at 160, search-result meta descriptions at ~160, YouTube titles at 100 and Facebook posts at 63,206. Two honest caveats: platforms change limits without notice, and some count differently than a plain character tally — X counts links as 23 characters and most emoji as 2, and SMS messages using non-GSM characters shrink to 70 per segment. Use the bars as a fast, close guide and rely on the platform's own composer for the final character.

Privacy by design

How does this word counter count words?

A word is a run of letters or digits, optionally joined by apostrophes or hyphens — so "don't" and "well-known" each count as one word. Extra spaces, tabs and line breaks between words are ignored, and emoji or bare punctuation are not counted as words. The same rule is applied consistently, so your count will not jump around as you edit.

Do emoji and punctuation count as characters?

Yes. The character count includes every visible character, including punctuation and emoji, measured in Unicode code points — a single emoji counts as 1 character here. Note that some platforms weight characters differently: X (Twitter) counts most emoji as 2 and every link as 23 characters, regardless of its real length.

Is my text uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. Your text never leaves your browser — all counting runs locally in the page using JavaScript, with no network calls, no account and no storage of what you type. Closing the tab erases everything.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time divides your word count by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed reported in Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of reading-rate studies. Speaking time uses roughly 150 words per minute, a commonly cited conversational presentation pace. Both are estimates — real speeds vary from person to person.

Why does my X (Twitter) count differ slightly from this counter?

X uses weighted counting: URLs always count as 23 characters, and most emoji and many non-Latin characters count as 2. This tool shows plain Unicode character counts, so for ordinary English text the numbers match, but posts heavy on links, emoji or CJK text will read lower here than in X's own composer. Treat the 280 bar as a close guide, not the platform's exact counter.

What counts as a sentence or a paragraph?

Sentences are split on ". ! ? …" followed by a space, and on line breaks; a trailing fragment without end punctuation still counts as one sentence. Abbreviations like "e.g." can inflate the count slightly, which is why the sentence stat is labeled approximate. Paragraphs are non-empty lines — pressing Enter starts a new paragraph, and blank lines are ignored.
